French Conversation and Review

Course Description: If you have studied French in the past, you will be surprised at how much can come back with a bit of practice. Each week we will review vocabulary on a specific topic and some basic grammar. We will then break into two groups based on previous French experience for conversation.

Class Leader Bio(s): Chris Lanoue has taught French for over 25 years. After minoring in French in college, she went to Paris for a summer to become fluent, realized it would take a little longer than she’d planned, and stayed for 17 years. Mission accomplished. Ginny Hess is a retired high school French teacher and is looking forward to conversing in French again.

Ballroom Dancing for Beginners

Course Description: We will be focusing on the basic foundational elements of Waltz, Foxtrot, Rumba, and Swing so you can enjoy dancing at your next social event and a fun, light cardio workout.

Class Leader Bio(s): Rachel Richey has been teaching ballroom dancing for 20 years. She is born and raised in Destin and has specialized in wedding choreography since 2010. She has done numerous showcases and competitions and now enjoys being a mother, wife, vocalists for the band “Hashtag Swing”, as well as a part-time dance instructor.

Notes: Please come ready to dance in comfortable shoes preferably something that is easy to rotate on a plank wood floor such as flats or shoes without a thick rubber sole. Bottled water is encouraged.

Beginner Watercolor Painting - Tuesday 10:15

Course Description: Using Techniques and tricks make watercolors fun! We will cover basic use of the medium, brushes and paper. This will include introducing techniques and practice to paint various subjects such as flowers, trees, landscape, etc. Bring pictures if you wish.

Class Leader Bio(s): Carolyn Williams is the owner of Sand Dollar Cottage, an artist’s cooperative in Navarre. She paints in watercolors, acrylics, pen and ink. She has been painting for about 25 years and has a BS and MS degree. Dorothy Edens is an experienced watercolor artist and multimedia artist.

Notes: $40 class fee for paints, paper and brushes. Students should bring a pencil, two containers for water, masking tape, paper towels, kneaded eraser and any watercolor supplies you have. Please mask if you feel it necessary.

Conversational German

Course Description: Have fun while improving and/or refreshing your German conversational skills. This is not a beginner’s German class, you need to know some basic German.

Class Leader Bio(s): Gisela Healey was born in Germany, earned an MS in Education and Library Science, and taught high school German for 18 years. She looks forward to having fun teaching at CLL. Nita Wilkinson is Gisela’s backup.  She lived and worked in Germany for 15 years, returned home with a German husband, and talks with German family and friends regularly.

Dissecting Disasters

Course Description: This class will look at our relationship with machines, and some disastrous accidents, and incidents, that have happened over the years in the aviation, maritime fields, and some even some unusual criminal activities. We will look at what went wrong and what was done to fix the problems. Accidents are normally a series of small incidents that end up causing something to fail. I will provide visual aids and summaries for each class.

Class Leader Bio(s): Robert Huffman retired as an Air Force NCO after 27 years of service. He was a C-130 Crew Chief and Air Force Instructor. He also worked for Boeing. He has a bachelor’s degree in political science.

Foundations and Principles of the U.S. Constitution

Course Description: Class will study the "Original Intent" of the Framers using writings of the Founders. A study of The Federalist Papers and other writings by the Framers will be used. Mr. Brock has developed a system for memorizing parts of the Constitution. In addition, a Dramatization of the events at the Constitutional Convention will be shown.

Class Leader Bio(s): Paul Wendel Brock has a B.A. in History and a M.A. in Educational Leadership. He taught Advanced Placement (college level) History at Ft. Walton Beach High School and retired after 30 years.

Notes: $3.00 for materials for a pocket size Constitution will be collected in class.

Games Galore

Course Description: Want to expand your social skills while having fun? This class will give you an opportunity to do that by learning new equipment and card games. Come join us and learn some new games and get refreshed on old standards.

Class Leader Bio(s): Karen Lauer is an experienced artist and CLL class leader. She loves to play games and introduced Wizard to the CLL community and camp conferences.  Den Lauer is a retired Navy Flight Officer who sat around a lot so he has years of experience playing games!

Notes: This is an 8 -week class meeting January 13- March 3.

Ornithology: The Scientific Study of Birds

Course Description: Birds, sensitive to changes in their environment, are literally canaries in the coal mine when it comes to global environmental issues. This 8-week course will cover the biology, ecology, and ethology of the more than 11,000 species of birds that populate our planet as well as global topics of climate, biodiversity, conservation, biomes, and terrestrial, aquatic and marine ecosystems. This is a university level study. If you are a serious birder, an environmentalist, or just enjoy watching birds in your yard, this course has something for you.

Class Leader Bio(s): The instructor, Dr. Ron Weiss, earned a doctorate degree in Avian Population studies, Directed the Bird Observatory in Central Indiana, held a Master Bird Banding license, and taught Ornithology and field methods at the university level. He conducted avian population research for the US Army at their Newport Indiana Chemical Depot, for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, and directed a tropical bird research effort in Central America. His research and general interest publications appear in Scientific Journals and popular magazines both here and abroad.
