Class Leader Bio(s): Pam Smith is a retired social studies and language arts teacher. She has worked extensively with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. She was awarded the USHMM Mandel Fellowship in 2000 to study and support Holocaust education. Pam returned to Florida in 2004 to live on Boggy Bayou.
Foundations and Principles of the U.S. Constitution
with Paul Wendel Brock
Course Description: Class will study the "Original Intent" of the Framers using writings of the Founders. A study of The Federalist Papers and other writings by the Framers will be used. Mr. Brock has developed a system for memorizing parts of the Constitution. In addition, a Dramatization of the events at the Constitutional Convention will be shown.
Notes: $3.00 for materials for a pocket size Constitution will be collected in class.
Class Leader Bio(s): Paul Wendel Brock has a B.A. in History and a M.A. in Educational Leadership. He taught Advanced Placement (college level) History at Ft. Walton Beach High School and retired after 30 years.
Dissecting Disasters

Course Description: This class will look at some disastrous accidents, incidents, and production failures that have happened over the years in the aviation, maritime fields, and also the automotive industry. We will try to understand what went wrong and why the preventive actions did or did not work, we will look at the circumstances of incidents and what was officially done to prevent possible reoccurrence of the problems. I will provide visual aids and summaries for each class.
Class Leader Bio(s): Robert Huffman retired as an Air Force NCO after 27 years of service. He was a C-130 Crew Chief and Air Force Instructor. He also worked for Boeing. He has a bachelor’s degree in political science.
After the Election - An Insider Shows What Happens Now in the White House
with Marie Hallion
Course Description: This course will discuss what transpires when a candidate wins the presidential election. Now titled President-elect, the incumbent faces the issue of transitioning administrations in two months, preparing for the presidential inaugural and assuming the mantle of leadership during the first 100 days in office. The First Family has a role to play as well. This course is a six-week class and will examine the history of this unique period that occurs once every four years.
Notes: This is a six-week course meeting January 15, 22, 29, February 5, 12 and 19.
Class Leader Bio(s): Dr. Marie Hallion is an Adjunct Professor at the Graduate School and the School of Undergraduate Studies of the University of Maryland Global Campus. She worked inside the White House from 1972 to 1978 during the Nixon, Ford and Carter Administrations and experienced two presidential transitions. She then moved to the newly created Energy Department in 1978. Marie specializes in organizational theory and a wide range of courses in government and politics. Awards she has received include the UMUC Teaching Excellence Award, the Graduate School Commitment to Excellence Award and the Professional Achievement Award.
International Studies

Course Description: This course broadly covers the activities/relations between Sovereign States addressing War, Diplomacy, Trade, and Foreign Policy. While providing summaries of current events on the International Stage we will attempt to discover apparent and fundamental changes underway in the 21st Century and relevancy to American security interests and well-being. The course follows a Geopolitical approach attempting an understanding in 2025 of an ever more complex, chaotic, and perilous World.
Class Leader Bio(s): Barry Pritchett is a retired Army Officer who served in the Corps of Engineers in various assignments around the US and Europe. He is a former instructor at the United States Military Academy at West Point.
Ancient Greece and Rome

Course Description: Western Civilization is the blend of Judeo-Christian morality and Greek science. This is a study of Greece and Rome when they were beacons of light in a barbarian darkness.
Class Leader Bio(s): Dan received his Ph.D. in history from Auburn University and teaches a wide range of European history classes for CLL.
Painters and Their Passions

Course Description: Learn more about Artists and the paintings you know and some you will have fun finding out about. We will start with impressionists and move from Monet to more modern ones, like Moudigliani and O’Keefffe. This is a 4-week class.

Class Leader Bio(s): Judy Faust loves to travel, and everywhere she goes she looks for museums, galleries and art exhibits to visit. She’s taken lots of pictures and has lots of information she wants to share.
The Death Penalty in America

Course Description: What does it mean when someone is sentenced to death in the US? Does the public support the death penalty as a legitimate punishment? This class will include a discussion of both moral and legal issues. Special attention will be paid to the purposes of handing out death sentences and whether those purposes are/have been met. Current topics as well as topics of interest to the class will be included.
Class Leader Bio(s): Dr. Kathy Johnson received a BS in 1987 and MS in 1989 in Criminal Justice from Illinois State University. Her PhD in Criminology is from Indiana University in Pennsylvania. She has been a faculty member in Criminology and Criminal Justice at UWF Classroom since August, 2000.
